Alternative Education and Supplemental Options
There are other educational options available to students depending on their individual situation. Counselors can often recommend programs or options available to students to fit their academic, personal, or career goals. In most cases, the student needs to speak to their counselor before they are able to pursue any other options.
Miller Big Picture Program: Big Picture learning is student-centered, where students actively own and invest in their education. Students will be part of a small learning community supported and led by an advisor. They will work closely with real-world mentors as well as their parents and families to develop their passions. Academic Options: Academic Options is for 11th and 12th grade students (seniors receive priority) as determined by the counselors and communicated to the CR instructor based on a student's need to recover credits or earn credits in an alternative way. A student may occupy no more than one period.
Miller Education TOPS program: TOPS is located at Miller Education Center’s East campus and is comprised of two separate programs. First, the Transitions program, which is a short-term program for students waiting to enter another education program. Positions are extremely limited, and are considered on a case-by-case basis. Second, the Diploma program is for fifth-year seniors who have 8 or fewer credits to go and want to complete their diploma requirements. For all programs, students will need to meet with their high school counselor.
Miller GED program: Students who are enrolled in the GED program will work with the teacher to create an individualized learning plan. Each student will work in an online learning environment along with working with the teacher to make progress in preparing for the official GED testing. Oregon National Guard Youth Challenge Program: OYCP, a residential program located in central Oregon, serves youths ages 16-18. OYCP targets students who have dropped out of high school or are likely to drop out. For more information see www.oycp.com
Job Corps: Job Corps is funded by the US Department of Labor. Participants must meet eligibility requirements and will earn their high school diploma or GED. Job Corps is beneficial to those students wanting hands-on experience and career technical training. It could provide housing as well. For more information see www.recruiting.Jobcorps.gov
PCC Gateway to College Program: Serves at-risk youths, 16-20 years old, at-risk for dropping out of school. Students simultaneously accumulate high school and college credit. District approval is required.
PCC Expanded Options: Expanded Options students must be juniors or seniors who are looking for additional options to continue or complete their education. Students must meet with their school counselor prior to enrolling in Expanded Options.
BYU Independent Study: BYU online offers a wide variety of courses for students wishing to take challenging coursework not offered at Glencoe, to replace grades from previously taken courses, or to makeup credits needed to graduate.
