Guidance Lessons
What Is Classroom Guidance?
Classroom Guidance aims to deliver information to students in larger groups (for example, by grade-level) in order to enhance their overall success. Topics covered in classroom guidance can be related to academic, personal/social or career success, and cover information that is relevant to all students.
Glencoe counselors conduct classroom guidance primarily by grade level. Multiple times per year, counselors enter student classrooms to review their academic progress and graduation requirements, create and maintain 4-year plans, and discuss post-secondary options. See below for more specific information about the activities done each year.
What Does Classroom Guidance Look Like by Grade Level?
Freshmen:
In September, Freshmen receive Freshmen 101 where students are educated about credits, transcripts and the effects of their grades on future opportunities. Emphasis is placed on starting out strong in high school so that more opportunities are available to students, from athletics, scholarships and financial aid to post-secondary options. Throughout the Fall, counselors meet with freshmen individually and conduct a short interview to get to know each student. Freshmen students begin looking at the "big picture" by using the Course Planner feature in Naviance to start a 4-year course plan in January. Students are given information to help them begin making decisions for their future and then enter selections into Naviance. Finally, in the Spring, counselors do classroom guidance for Freshmen to introduce them to their post-high school options and students complete their 9th grade Naviance activity, a required piece of their Career Credit.

Sophomores:
In the Fall, counselors do classroom guidance covering academic requirements and options, including College & Career Pathway (CCP) Programs. Options for after high school are revisited, with new information for each to helps Sophomores take another step in planning. Just after the second semester starts, counselors work with their caseload in small groups to revise a 4-year plan, including integrating information about CCPs, graduation requirements and forecasting options. Starting this year, this activity will happen in the Course Planner tool in Naviance. Finally, in the Spring, Sophomores complete their Naviance activity helping them to sign up for a Career-Related Learning Experience (CRLE), part of the Career Credit, and beginning a resume.

Juniors: In the Fall, Juniors experience classroom guidance that largely focuses on developing a post-secondary plan and aligning their academics to that plan. This is where they complete their Naviance activity for grade 11, which helps them to look at factors of selecting a college. In the Spring, Juniors receive classroom guidance again to get introduced to the many tasks of senior year. A large emphasis is placed on tasks that can be started or completed over the summer to avoid feeling overwhelmed during Senior Year.

Seniors:
The majority of guidance for Seniors comes from individual tracking of graduation requirements and post-secondary planning from Mrs. Fields. Depending on the student and the plan, various college and career-related opportunities are available, include college/program visits, financial aid workshops, career days, application workshops, field trips, testing opportunities and more.
